Proteins: what exactly are they?  Proteins are the building blocks of our body.  They are part of our structure: our bones, our muscles, our hair and nails, our skin are all created from proteins. But proteins have several other functions that are just as important.     They help produce enzymes, hormones and immune system antibodies, which can defend us against infection and disease.   Why are proteins essential?
